30 Hour Famine Retreat

Youth will be fasting for 30 hours while raising money for World Vision to feed hungry children. Fasting is a common spiritual practice that brings youth closer to God.  In the Bible, people fasted for a lot of different reasons. Some did it to get right with God (Nehemiah 9:1). Some fasted as an act of worship (Acts 13:2) or to discern the Lord’s will (2 Chronicles 20:3). And Jesus Himself fasted to get ready for His public ministry (Matthew 4:2).  The average teenager can fast for 30 hours with no problem.  The fast is broken with communion and a large meal on Saturday night.  The cost is $90 (which includes transportation, juice, meals, programming, & a t shirt).

DISCOVERY WEEKEND

Discovery is a 43-hour spiritual-formation weekend based on the same general outline as Emmaus or Chrysalis for 6 – 12th graders.  To quote from the manual, it is a chance for the youth “to not only learn about, but to experience, the love of God.”  It is organized by a steering committee of adults and senior highs for the junior highs.  And while Discovery is for the youth, it invites the whole church, and it does take the WHOLE church, “to live out it’s Baptismal covenant of surrounding these children with a community of love and forgiveness so they may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal.”

The youth come on Friday afternoon.  The junior highs are grouped into tables with an adult and senior high table leaders that they spend the whole weekend with. They listen to talks, live music and do projects aimed at strengthening their relationship with God.  There is a time of prayer in the prayer chapel but also a Prayer Service at 7:00 on Saturday night that is for the whole church to be a part of.  Members of the church come and go throughout the weekend in various roles that give each a chance to get to know the other a little better.  Finally, the Sunday morning church service gives the youth a chance to share some of their weekend with their church family.
